As a D&D'er of almost a decade, I've noticed also that some players develop tics, or traits that their characters were created with. Example: A guy I RP'd with a few years back would twitch like he described his character as doing, soon though, it wasn't just during a game session. (I tend to have the players flesh out their characters for my campaigns.)

Hmm, and indeed, we all have roles, some good some bad, and others just inbetween. You could also say that being a parent, student, or even a grocery purchaser is a role.

Really good response from Asaxy above, not too much I can add. Would like to say though, one of the big keys is to plan what you're going to eat ahead of time. Meaning, when you wake up in the morning you should already have your entire meal plan for the day (this includes snacks, soda pop, etc) planned out. Included in this plan needs to be the calorie count for everything you're going to be eating, as well as a ballpark figure of your sodium. While this may sound like a big nag at first it actually only takes a few minutes to plan out the day before, and so long as you're keeping track of what your intake is, then you will find ways to meet your targets. Be sure to throw in a day or two each week where you cheat and get a greaseball burger though!

Keep in mind that sodium isn't necessarily evil, the ideal amount for your body is not the same as everyone else- it depends on your activity level, metabolism, body chemistry, etc. For example, before I go on a long run I load up on carbs the night before (or morning if I've got a couple hours before the run) lotsa bread and pasta- typically between the sauce and noodles there's plenty of sodium in it. If I weren't going to be running 13 miles this would be a bad thing, but my body will thank me for it when I'm 7 miles into the run with 6 to go. An hour or so before the run I'll also load up on gatorade, which is also full of sodium. Once again, if I weren't going to be exerting myself this would be a bad thing. But because I'm loaded up on sodium and other electrolytes I can do the run in good time with no worries about muscle cramps, exhaustion, dehydration etc.

I take in between 500-100 mg sodium a day. How... I pretty much don't eat anything that is processed. If it does not look like its original form then I don't eat it. How does that translate...

Bread is replaced with steamed brown rice or other steamed grain
- rice bowls: steamed rice topped with steamed or stir fried veggies with your protein of choice
- toss a cup of cold rice into your salads
- make a rice salad...add chopped parsley, garlic, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers (veggies of your desire) and dress with apple cider vinegar and olive oil
- breakfast rice: add dried or fresh fruit of your choice, milk of your choice and a few shopped nuts
- dessert: heat up with coconut milk, cardamom, vanilla bean and a bit of honey (I use agave nectar) for rice pudding...serve with sauteed bananas or grilled pineapple. Divine!

If you have to have bread, invest in a bread machine and bake your own. You control the salt content then. Last resort is whole grain, low-sodium bread but I think they taste like ass.

Lots of salads with an assortment of veggies dressed with flax oil and lemon and herbs

I make my own soups and freeze them in take away containers...lunch is grab, nuke and go. Tastes so much better and costs a fraction of store bought.

I cook my own legumes and freeze in serving size portions
- toss into stir fries or into rice bowls
- puree with garlic, lemon and olive oil for an awesome dip for veggies

I always have fresh fruit on hand for juicing and eating
Fav snack...apple wedges with natural, no salt added peanut butter
Other snacks... raw almonds, walnuts and macadamias paired with fruit

I eat a HUGE volume of food but only take in between 1200-1300 calories each day. (I'm short and losing weight) I even manage to have my organic, vegan dark chocolate on most days.

Your taste buds will rebel in the beginning but give yourself a couple of weeks to adjust. All of a sudden you are tasting the FOOD and not the enhancement of salt.

What I've suggested may seem like lots of work but it takes no more time than the old way of doing things for me. In fact, I prepare food one way for me and another for Ock. He LOVES salt!

Hope this is helpful.
How about we just eliminate those who win? Last one standing is it.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-06T07:08:51</pubDateParsed>
Dr Guy on The Primary Stystem is Broken, and What We Can Do About It.

The mainstream media wants a Democrat in office.
The problem isn't the primaries, the problem is our perceptions. Why would anyone running for office drop out after Iowa and New Hampshire? There is plenty of time and states to recover what little was lost in terms of delegates or "wins". What is lost though is the perception of success.

For example, right now, Mitt Romney is in the lead. However, the perception is, that since he didn't win Iowa or New Hampshire, he is "trying to revive his campaign". Since when does the person winning (so far) have to "revive" anything. On the other hand, Hillary was devastated by her 3rd place showing in Iowa. Devastated to the point of near tears, and even talking about replacing a lot of her campaign staff. After New Hampshire, she was all smiles, and full of compliments to her campaign staff. All the while, she is still losing to Obama in delegates, so nothing really changed from Iowa to New Hampshire... except the perceptions.

The only real big problem with our primary system is, too many states allow "open primaries". If you let people who aren't members of a party help choose the nomiee, then it's a lie to say that the winner is the party's nominee of choice.

This would eventually allow all sates to play a major part in the election.

On the face of it, this sounds good. But let's think a little about it.

First, if your premise is correct (i.e. the early states determine the nominee) it means every four years we would have a nominee DETERMINED BY FEW STATES albeit a different few. So what did WE achieve? .... nothing i suppose.

Second, the current FEW states who vote early are really small states, they really dont determine the nominees. What they do is scrutinize the candidates in an extraordinary way of personal and very close encounter way that shows what and who everyone of them really are.

We may envy those little few states. but no other few states could achieve what they do. imagine in your state for example; can you guys there do what the people in Iowa or NH do? i doubt it. in my state, NJ, smaller than yours .... I dont think we can do that. We are busy, self-occupied, have no time for a looong lunches or breakfasts at local diners to sit and listen to those politicians bare their souls and ideas .... most of us will say : yeah ... yeah .... i got you .... thanks .... i have to run. ... wish you the best ... bye.

People in Iowa and NH dont do that. They really squeeze those politicians, exhaust them and get them to "CRY" or beg or crumble.

I think the system as is NOW is good. States like Yours and Florida should get real and admit that they cant do what IA and NH do. They dont determine the nominees. What they do is they show the nation the reality of each candidate and the rest of the nation use that knowledge in voting. .... if we go to other large states we would know nothing other than who won and that would really be terrible. we will just go with the winner ...... no other information would be available ....

All we have to do to make the current system better is fix the voting dates of the early little states then make it a regional in such a way that no one can get more than 50% of the delegates before the final region.

I would make it 4 regions and group them to get the indicated delegates' % : East 20% , south 20%, midwest 20% and West 40%. we can make the timing between each region a month starting in March, April, May and June. This way they have a month after the early states then a month between each region. then they can hold the convention in July and August.

If they can do that, i think it would be very good and gives all states a fair chance in choosing the nominees based on a lengthy scrutiny early on and then the voting in all states.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-06T07:08:51</pubDateParsed>
ThinkAloud on The Primary Stystem is Broken, and What We Can Do About It.

We don't need a rotation at all, and we don't need a race to have the first in the nation primary or caucus. We need to have our primaries and caucuses all on the same day so that no one area gets any more attention than others do and so that no one state gets to select the nominee and front runner for any other state.

I enjoy sending and receiving Christmas cards. I go through my list, that I've already made too. AT least for that, I'm on top of, I just haven't mailed anything out yet, but plan on sitting down this weekend to sign and put them in their respective envelopes! The last time I sent cards was 2005 (which means it wasn't THAT long ago so I'll probably do it again within the next few years). Those Christmas cards were handmade, heartfelt, creative, and tailor-made for 15 select recipients. What a headache they were though!!!

But I'll always remember visiting my Grandma the following August, she had that Christmas card prominently displayed on her entertainment center. That's proof enough to me that cards are appreciated. I'll never forget anyone who went the extra mile to give me a card.
I guess to eliminate the stress means that a lot of prior planning is necessary. I'm not usually feeling very Christmas-y in August though.
